Bringing in AVI files
A client of mine gave me a bunch of avi files which my Quicktime couldn’t read. I downloaded the necessary components and was able to view the files with no problem. When I tried to bring them into Final Cut Pro HD 4.5, it wouldn’t play them stating “File Error: No Memory.” I have never seen this before. I tried bringing in several other Quicktime files, and they played with no problem. I even tried converting the files to .mov files and Final Cut still gives me the same error. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and how I can fix this? Thanks so much for your help.

How did you convert them to MOV’s?

There are an enormous variety of different flavors of AVI files created in a variety of NLEs and apps on the Microsoft platform. You need to ask the client which app was used to create the files. Report back here and I can possibly help you sort it out with that info.

I suggest you talk to the PC guy and ask him to export clips in a format you can use rather than attempt to convert them at your end.
We see this issue about weekly so there are hundreds of threads you can research. It’s a very complicated situation because Microsoft, Apple and Adobe all think they have the last and best solutions for digital media. And there are millions of hopelessly out of date digital media users on PCs..
