.wmv files in compressor
In Compressor for Final Cut Pro 6, is there a setting to convert to .wmv files. If so, I can’t seem to find it. Thank you.

Shocking and almost unbelievable, NO WMV in compressor!
I’m not sure what game apple were playing there but it strikes me as a very small, head in the sand-type of mentality. As I write, im rendering a mpeg-1 rough cut for my client to see. She is used to WMV which is far better quality and plays back on all the PC’s in her company. Sadly, like me, you will have to use Quicktime and Flip4mac – a rudimentary WMV encoding tool.

Hey Mark, Flip4Mac makes several versions of its WMV encoders, you just bought the cheap version… If you want something other than rudimentary spend a little more…
As I recall, you were willing to spend a whole more for your NLE software about eight or nine years ago and it didn’t even have WMV encoding capabilities. Of course, WMV hadn’t been invented then either, but that’s beside the point.

Nope, not wishful thinking… If you purchase the Flip4Mac plug you can in fact encode to WMV from Compressor. It requires choosing “Quicktime Export Components” and then changing the encoder type to Windows Media.

it just amazes me apple can be so arrogant.
go to compressor and you would think quicktime was the only thing on the planet.
im just used to premier, where you can do every codec i know, including all QT, AVI incl Xvid, divx etc, FLA, Real, WMV, MPEG1, 2, 4 etc… Why should fcp require plugins to do absolutely basic things like wmv?The same kind of closed-shop thing happens with iPod TTouch. Nice machine, but you are FORCED to have Quicktime, FORCED to have iTunes just to be able to load MP3 files.
i guess im used to a more open environmentt… (and this computer keeps typing double letters, despite keyboard repeat delay set really slow)

I do have flip4mac on my computer. I used quicktime components in the last version of compressor, but I can’t find that in the new compressor.

Easiest way is to scroll down to Custom and create a new setting by clicking on the + sign dropdown on the right side of that panel, which allows you to select from a list including Quicktime Export Components.

Ever wonder why the Adobe suite is more expensive than the Apple suite??? Now you know…
If Apple marketing thought that being all-inclusive was more important than price point, they’d have included everything, but they know that the vast majority of their market are more inclined to buy in at the entry level, happy to add on as needed. Its a different model than Adobe, but it obviously seems to work.
