  • Aspect Ratio changed from 16:9 to 4:3 SOMEHOW?

Posted by Doc Jonez on September 12, 2007 at 8:03 pm

I shot a Wedding on my Sony HDV V1U in 1080 60i. I captured the project into FCP express HD with the EASY SETUP AS the same 1080 60i.on to my computer. I edited about 3 hours of footage in the original format of 16:9 wide screen. I have left the project alone and just recently today came back to finish it and the screen size has change to 4:3 normal screen. i don’t want this at all and I dont want to re-edit 3 hrs of footage again.

I read some earlier postings about copying and pasting the project into a new SEQ and removing the attributes. That worked on the majority of the clips but not all??? Why not all of them??? Also why does FCP do this? Such a pain. Please any help would be useful.

    Hi Harvey,

Not sure why FCP woudl change the aspect ratio of a project, but hey, its a computer. You ahve to expect wierd things to happen. What you also need to do is read the manual and you will see that aspect ratio in FCP is a wonderful thing, and very easy to play around with in useful ways….just for you info, read a post from just thig week. Hoep it helps

    Bones,
just so you know FCP doesnt alter aspect ratio when importing. You can tell it how you want to view each bit of footage after (or before) you capture. You can do this either in the browser by ticking ‘anamorphic’. Or if you have already put clips in a sequence, you double click and in the motion tab, change the distort/aspect ratio to one of 0, 33.33, -33.33, depending on what ‘shape’ you want you image. Play around with the setting…..

By ‘removing attributes’, you were removing the aspect ratio that FCP had automatically put on the clip by you trying to put an ‘anamorphic clip into a 4:3 (non-anamorphic) sequence. You can also ‘paste attributes’, i.e change the aspect ration for one clip, copy clip(apple-c), select your clips, then paste attributes (alt-v), and that will copy various settings to you new clips.

    cheers

I figured it out.Remove attributes was the best way. It worked for the size issue. Thanks.
