The saga continues… I just received an email from the so-called in house “editor” for the project I’ve edited here’s his note:
“Hi… Mark here … I’ll be re-rendering the video once the changes are made. I just wanted to step in and clear a thing or 2 up because there seems to be a lot of confusion where there shoudn’t be.. it’s kind of simple what we need.
We need to make some type corrections to the FCP file, and re-render the movie. That’s pretty much it. We don’t want the tapes (don’t even have a machine to put the tapes in), we just need the FCP file and the quicktime/photoshop/illustrator/etc files it is referencing.
If the uncompressed source files are too large, DV compressed files are fine for our purposes as long as they’re saved in ‘best’ or ‘highest-quality’, or ‘100%” or whatever your compressor calls it, at full 720×480 resolution. The movies we recieved last week, seem to be ‘draft’ rendered versions or something … the video is blocky as if it’s half rez and all the type and imported logos are jaggy, even when you select ‘high quality’ in the quicktime properties dialog box.
Ultimately, we just want to open the FCP file, make type changes, and render the new movie out without it telling us source files are missing. The source files it is accessing don’t have to be the highest quality uncompressed mega-files… but they should look almost as good.. DV compression at the best quality possible for DV compression, and at full video resolution, is good enough as far as I’m concerned.”
Now my questions to any fello cow members who can help. The project is an uncompressed 8 bit program. I sent them per their instructions a DV Quicktime. They are now complaining about Jagged edges. Is there something I did wrong on export? Instead of using export current settings, I used export as DV.
What do I need to do to get this client what they need? Can you give me a work flow here to organize all the files for them? Should I bother exporting as a DV, or should I give them a Uncompressed 8 bit? Keep in mind I need to upload all of this to their so=called high speed FTP sight. I’d be grateful for any more help. DV compression hammered your pristine 8-bit graphics files. Export a DV50 QT file and check to see if that doesn’t improve things for you and the client. It’ll be twice as large as a DV file, but in 4:2:2 color space, thus preserving your graphics much better than DV.

Thanks David. So if they want all of the video files and titles, do I need to save everything as DV 50? or do I just give them uncompressed 8 Bit quicktime files? They want me to give them the project file and all video clips as well as all livetype graphics.

I’d send them both a texted and textless version of the edited video in DV50, and the Livetype files and any other graphics. That’s it… That would give them the ability to make changes to the graphics just as they have requested. Does that make sense?

Thnaks for your help David. That was my thought all along. However, they also want to have the source files so they can posibly re-edit later on. Is there a way I can convert all used media from 8 bit uncompressed to DV50? Or should i just give them all media as uncompressed 8 bit and let them deal with that? Thanks.

If they only want to make some type changes can’t they just tell you what they are and let you make them? save all this mucking about?

No Kidding! But for some reason they think they will have to make various changes down the road and feel that their in-house department can handle it, although for some reason they didn’t feel they could initially handle the edit.

I think your best bet is to FTP the texted and textless DV50 files now, along with the Livetype and other graphics files. And then later get them to ship you a firewire drive which you’ll use to ship their entire project. You can use Media Manager to convert all the video to DV50, but I wouldn’t get into that if I were you. I’d let them worry about that.
