  • trim w/sequence audio vs trim w/edit selection audio

    Problems –

I understand that “trim with sequence audio” lets me hear all tracks and “edit selection audio” has me hear only the tracks I have selected and am trimming.

The factor of linking is causing trouble.

Say I lay one shot down, all linked, then do a video only overwrite in the middle of that shot. the end of that shot’s video is now unlinked to the end of the shot’s audio. Then I splice a regular shot (with linked audio/video) onto the tail of that. Now I want to make a trim.

If I have the “trim with sequence audio selected,” and I want to add to the tail of the A (unlocked shot’s) side, both video and audio, I do not hear the audio of the A side, but of the B side! Ironically, I hear it when I am playing it backwards in the trim window (after I have played to the right, dynamic trimming having updated the out point).

If I have the “edit selection audio” option checked and add to the tail of the A (unlocked) side (ripple edit), I can hear the audio if both video and audio are selected (using the trim window). But if I want to make a roll edit, sliding the video cut to the left or right, I do not hear the audio at all, since is is not selected. Is there a way around this? This question may have nothing to do with the fact that the A side is not linked.

Given the scenario, it appears that if I want to slide the video cut (i.e., roll edit) and hear the audio underneath, I must have the “sequence audio” option selected, but if I want to add to tail of side A (ripple edit), video and audio, I must have the “edit selection audio (mute others)” option chosen.

Is there a way I can leave preferences at one setting and take care of both? I have tried leaving both checked, but it acts like “edit selection” is the only box checked. If I leave both unchecked, I get no audio at all either way.

    Please advise.

This is a question I have as well. On my current software, I am used to hearing ALL track sound during trimming (umless I solo my choice of any tracks while in trim mode). Is this possible in FCP?

Your sum up of the situation is spot on. The audio monitoring preferences in trim mode are quite confusing.

For the example you gave of making a video only roll trim to reposition a cut while making the trim decision based on audio, I would not do this in the Trim Edit Window.

Instead, select the video only edit point in the Timeline. Then scrub to position the playhead on the frame you want to move the edit to and simply press ‘E’ to ‘Extend’ the selected edit point.

Matthew, yes, you can hear all audio tracks in FCP as you trim – just be sure to select “trim with sequence audio” in your preferences. You will hear music and sound fx as you trim dialogue, for example.

Martin, yes, I too often use the extend function. However, sometimes I am extending the length of a shot on the A side or B side, and the decision of the edit point is based on the sound (i.e., the dialogue). If I wish to use dynamic trimming and play the A side forward as I make the trim, I want to be able to hear that audio as I go (as opposed to hearing the audio of the B side as it currently sits in the timeline). If the video and audio of the given clip is not linked, I will not hear it unless I have selected “trim with selection.” (Which prevents me from hearing audio when I am doing a video-only dynamic roll trim.)

Hopefully Apple will address this issue.

Thanks, Martin. On my other software, I somehow managed to get by without its Extend feature, I guess I just didn’t like using it. Instead, I either dragged the trim rollers or sometimes used the Enter key to quickly drive my Roll (or Ripples) way forward- the beauty being the Rollers would stop at the next available editpoint- so it was a kind of all-purpose forward extend, but with the advantage of keeping the interface in Trim mode for further tweaking.

Sounds like I’ll need to explore Extend on FCP.
