Ken Stone 24p DVD method not working
Hey Guys,
I have never had any luck making an SD 24p dvd. I have followed the method that Ken Stone describes of exporting a quicktime movie first and then putting that into compressor. That part works, compressor reads the movie as 23.98 and when I make the mpg2 and do a get info in QT Player, it reads as 23.98, but then when I import that movie into DVDSP it says that the rate of the mpg2 is 29.97, not 23.98. Does anyone know what I could possibly be doing wrong? I have never been able to get this to work (and I’ve tried on multiple machines). Is there a setting in DVDSP that I am overlooking.Thanks,

This is the way DVDSP reads it, don’t know why, confuses a lot of people. Sounds like you are good to go.
You will have a true 24P DVD, and the DVD player puts in the pull down when played back on a standard on digital TV.

Thanks for the response. The DVDSP manual claims that you will see the true frame rate in the inspector…but I am still seeing 29.97

Why are you reading the manual, sorry that is a bad joke, since nobody seems to read the manual before they post simple questions. (which yours is not)
I did a quick test just to make sure that things didn’t change with the massive upgrade to DVDSP 4.2, okay another bad joke, but the inspector still says the footage is 29.97. That has always been explained is this is the way a DVDs TC works and then when a play is setup correctly, Progressive, and hooked to a Digital TV the video streams that are flagged as 24P will in fact be 24P.
I have to admit this seems backwards. But if you step throw the video in DVDSP timeline you will see that there are duplicate frames for the pull down but the same file viewed in QT will not have those frames.
To test the final DVD you can step through the video and you should not see any of the duplicated frames.

Thanks for your help. So indeed it worked…I don’t know why DVDSP cannot tell you somewhere that your asset is truly 23.98, but at least now I know not to trust it…but it seems like one would be setting themselves up for a lot of errors with this inaccuracy. I built the DVD and then I took the VOB into MPEG Streamclip and it read the video stream as 23.98. Awesome. This all came about because an audio house asked if we could give them a DVD to score to. Someone here made a DVD from a 24p quicktime using Compressor and DVDSP. The audio house gave us back VO tracks that were 31 and 1/2 seconds long and said the the video was that long and shouldn’t it be 30 seconds? Well, that confused the hell out of me, and I just figured the DVD had been made wrong and the discrepancy in length had to do with someone on our end making a 29.97 dvd from a 23.98 quicktime without doing it the right way. But I just happened to check the VOB of the DVD that the audio house worked off of…and lo and behold it is 23.98, and 30 seconds long (well a couple of frames short…most likely due to MPEG2 I frames or something). So I guess that I can conclude two things from today 1. I now know how to successfully make a 24p DVD and 2. The audio house must have f***d up on their end.Good day.
