Export MXF-wrapped JPEG2000 image sequence
Hey everyone,
I have a short feature film (45 mins) shot on HD which we want to project on a 2K beamer which is fed by some kind of DCI-compliant server system. The server accepts MXF files with a JPEG2000 image sequence inside. The sound should be delivered as an AC3 file for 6-channel surround sound.
Does anyone know of a Mac-based solution to exporting MXF-wrapped JPEG2000 image sequences, ideally, but not necessarily directly from Final Cut Pro?

There’s a program called Raylight (dvfilm.com). I believe it can convert Quicktimes to MXF. So one would think you just make a JPEG2000 Quicktime, and convert it to MXF. I can’t say for sure though.
The MXF format competes with Quicktime. I wouldn’t expect any convinient solution from Apple anytime soon.

thanks for the reply. The problem is that the MXF file needs to be DCI-compliant for the server to use it; Raylight can only (as far as I can see) export MXF files for P2 or XDCAM media.
I guess I have to ask to server’s manufacturer how they deal with the conversion process…

Hi Lasse, Just wondering if you worked out a solution to creating JPEG 2000 wrapped in an MXF file.
I thought that the JPEG 2000 was a video file ratjher than an image sequence?
Anyway i would be ineterested to see what yuor solution was.Thanks

Hey,
it turned out that the problem runs much deeper – we tried to convert the material for a D-Cinema server (DCI compliant MXF files), and we found out that the DCI norm is extremely specific about every single detail of the whole specification, be it picture, sound and metadata – it’s not simply “converting something into an MXF wrapper”, it’s converting something into “a DCI compliant MXF container set”. If the container doesn’t comply exactly to the specs, the server simply won’t play it.
There are machines by “doremicinema” which cost about EUR 38,000 (Germany) that can only do that – get data input on one side, output DCI-compliant MXF files on the other side. That’s about all. So I guess I won’t find some free software on the net which does the same thing…

Technicolor and Deluxe have offices around the world and can MXF wrap JPEG2000 files for playback in cinemas.
