  HD Editing for feature film

  Hi, I’m editing an indie feature shot on Canon HDV and the Panasonic HVX.

  I have a few questions.

  I have not bought a system to do this and was wondering what I should use to edit in HD. If I buy a Mac pro with 2 DVI slots, can I use a secondary monitor to make sure I’m viewing the material in fullscreen HD via the settings in FCP?

  Or is there some firewire converter that can go to the HDTV via HDMI or DVI?
  What about Blackmagic or Kona?

  Lastly, the final product needs to be on Digibeta, so I guess I need to go somewhere to do this. Any ideas on how to do it so I preserve HD quality?

  You will need an card like a Kona or Decklink to monitor the HD.

  Your playout should be to an HD format – D5, HDCam SR or HDCam. Digi beta is standard def.

  The kona/ Decklink option is also required to do the output to HDcam etc.

  I’m a little confused about the HD/SD SDI link. Is this used for monitoring the HD on a HDTV?

  I plan on using a normal HDTV LCD from Best Buy. Will it even have that connection? Can I use an HDMI connection for monitoring the HD from Blackmagic’s Intensity Pro?

  The Matrox MXO will be able to turn an Apple 23″ display or a Dell 24″ display (forget exactly which model) into a decent HD monitor. Shane Ross has used it and was able to get his 23″ ACD very close to the Sony HD CRT he normally uses. The MXO also offers HD/SD-SDI out and down-conversion.
