I would like to be able to recreate the special effect in heroes, where Hiro stops time and moves in a time frozen world. Using time remaping and masks I was able to freeze some objects but ran into lighting and shadow problems. I would also like to move the camera around. For example, I would like to move around a room where all the characters are frozen, and where somebody dropped a glass on the ground just as time froze. All I can think of for now is using cgi and having actors hold very still. Any ideas?

Well, if you search the web for “timeslice” and “bullet time”, you will find enough info on how it is done best and indeed it involves a lot of 3D in many cases. If the duration of the shot is not too long, having your actors hold still is of course an option, but it’s never going to be 100% perfect. Several episodes of the various Star Trek series used this (holodeck episodes for instance).

Also in some of the shots of Heroes there are some noticeable actors holding still. I recall one shot at the roulette in an episode where that clearly happened.

Easy to do poorly, expensive and time consuming to do properly.

If you don’t even have access to a proper equipment don’t attempt it unless you are prepared to be dissapointed.
