Bumping this back up because this is either unsolvable or no one read it because of my title…….

Here’s an interesting case file. I started a small project in FCP 5.1.4 and my friend wanted some 3D effects from Motion 3 so we intalled FCS2. It was a 3 camera shoot on DV. When I went to open the project in FCP 6.0.1 random pieces of footage were playing back horribly out of sync. So, I right clicked and chose “Reveal in Finder” when I opened the source clip in Quicktime the clip plays back perfectly. I tried exporting XMLs, opening the project on a different computer, all with the same result. Can anyone help me?

Oh, one last thing, another project off the same drive opened up in FCP6 perfectly and that wasn’t cuts only (a few dissolves).

    Here’s my gear list:

    MacBook Pro 15″
    1GB RAM
All software is up to date
Western Digital 160GB Passport drive. (It’s a DV cuts only timeline)

    Thanks in advance,

When you say this was a three camera shoot, were you using multicam? Merging clips? Speed changes from long clips? Can’t tell what’s happening without really looking at what you’re doing. You might be best off manually resyncing the material and re-linking it.

    All the best,

    Tom-

Thanks for the response. I was not using multicam. I was using the A Camera as a base then manually laying in alt. cameras.
This was man-on-the-street interview footage shot by teenagers. No long clips, no speed changes, just cuts.

I’ve tried making everything offline and then re-connecting because like I said, the source files are fine. I’m considering blowing the files out and doing a re-capture. This is the weirdest thing I’ve seen in my many years using FCP.

Recapturing sounds like a bad plan, because you’re likely to recapture based on the correct clip parameters and get the wrong media. Set the Canvas to show timecode and see what’s happening to the video and audio TC. BTW, what sample rate was this material shot at and what sample rate was used in the capture preset?

    All the best,

    Hi,

Personally Id move the media onto a firewire drive with independant power adaptor. I’ve used mobile drives, small externals, USB and firewire, self powered and unpowered and I’ve never been 100 percent confident with USB self mobile drives. Even when they have worked perfectly as I suspect is the case for you, I’ve ended up running into problems at some point. In terms of lower cost drives I really cant say enough good things about G-Raids or for mobile the Lacie Porsche Firewire400 using USB power.

    Hope this helps

I had a similar issue. Did an edit in 5.1.4 when I opened it in FCP 6 it was all out of sync. A call to Apple tech said they heard of this before but it was happening to too small a number of people to really be a problem for Apple. That’s all they told me and gave no solutions.

6.0.1 fixed it a little but I’m now I’m back to working off a SuperDuper! clone on a firewire drive of my HD before I updated to FCP 6 to finish the project in 5.1.4. Can’t recommend more highly cloning before updating a working system.

Well… I can tell you this just happened to me last week with a project for the first time. Now, I have all of the latest and greatest software installed on a Quad 3.0 with 8 gig of RAM.

I tried the manual sync…. it kept slipping out of sync. Finally, I had to recapture the clips and everything was fine.

Now, here’s the real kicker… the video in question had been working just fine for the past two days before it slipped out of sync. Then for some sick reason, it just slipped out.
