Copy/Paste problem leaving Gaps & other problems
I am building a large project, from tons of footage, for an hour long documentary. I am building sequences in seperate timelines for each subject. Then putting the finished sequence into my main timeline sequence.
This is where my problems occur. I employ the copy paste method. Selecting my secondary timeline sequence, copying it, and then pasting it into my main timeline. When I do this, numerous places in the sequence are changed: creating gaps between clips, changing the in/out points to my clips, and some changing the clips timecode. Also, many times this will lose my clip attributes like basic motion and opacity, etc.

Curt,
All editors use copy and paste, but not all editors are having the issues you’re having. Are you new to FCP?

I’ve been using FCP for awhile, never having this problem. I’m wondering if it’s a singular event, because I’ve found no one who has this problem, nothing online. If you have and/or solved this problem please help. Possibly need to re-install FCP?

Have you tried trashing prefs? If that doesn’t work try Fixing Permissions with the Disk Utility.

Repaired Permissions still same problem. Also opened the project in a new account which created new preferences. Plus we opened the project on a different mac, and the same problem occured.
One interesting thing I found is that if I create a new blank sequence it will paste there perfectly. It seems to be in a sequence that has been around for a while or possibly a sequence that has been duplicated (which I do a lot).
That’s my workflow, I create a sequence then fiddle with it. I then duplicate it when something major is going to change, so I can go back to the previous version if the changes don’t work out.
What do you think about reloading the software? Something could be corrupted, possibly?

I wouldn’t reinstall the software unless this happens over and over again. Now that you know you can work around the issue sucessfully by pasting into a new timeline I think you’ll be fine. FYI, there is possibly something funky with the FCP3 database that shows its head when duplicating sequences and then reopening the old one.
