Washed out colors in quicktime.
Hi all, i’ve been a long time PC user, and have always rendered out my movies (usually a few minute graphic/live action mixed videos from aftereffects) as quicktime PNG because it compresses so well for a lossless codec.
Now i’ve switched to mac and want to convert them all to ProRes (save a bit of space, easier to playback when needed, and way easier to edit when updating my reel etc.).
I open a quicktime PNG in quicktime, export straight from quicktime pro, and the resulting movie is really washed out compared to the quicktime PNG (looking at them both with quicktime on the same monitor!). When I compare the 2 files in FCP I cannot tell the difference, but my quicktime display is difference than my FCP display (the quicktime PNG appears the same in quicktime as it does in FCP, but the prores is more washed out in quicktime than in FCP!). It sounds like some kind of color profile management problem, but how do I fix it? My monitor is a dell 2407 (rev a04) and is calibrated with an eye1. Any ideas are welcome,

Turn on the FCP studio compatibility button in QuickTime Pro’s Preferences.

Hi Thanks, that seems to have done the trick for those quicktimes, but now all my other quicktimes are too dark! I dont understand exactly whats correcting for what here. Normally does quicktime take the monitor color profile into account? or is it final cut which does?
