Are plasmas 8-bit?
Posted by Tom Brooks on August 25, 2007 at 9:15 pmIs a plasma panel capable of displaying any more than 8-bit color? The Panasonic HDMI terminal board is HDMI v1.2, and thus limited to 8-bit. Is analog component on these panels any better?

August 25, 2007 at 10:44 pmpretty much All display devices are 8-bit only.
I think the only real 10-bit displays are PRO CRT’s with SMPTE C phospors and there are LCD’s with 10-bit gamma but still only display 8-bits.
The E-cinema LCD’s might be 10-bit as well.

correct.
its also the encodes we use to view the video on these devices ie; Mpeg for DVD or Sat/ cable – whether it be SD or HD is only 8bit.
most raw ( native) codec’s are only 8bitthe best 10bit compressed codecs most people never heard of {like Sheer or Microcosm vs Avids DNXHD and Apple’s ProRes)

August 26, 2007 at 1:27 pmThanks for both responses. Those perspectives are helpful. I’m integrating a Betacam-SP path to the Kona LHe in a new room and looking for the best way to either free up the existing component cables or create another from SDI and a converter.
