I am trying to capture from a Sony dvd handycam to FCP HD 4.5 through the USB cable that comes with the camera. I’ve been unsuccessful so far and just looking for a solution, whatever it might be.

No version of FCP supports your type of camera, or capture through USB for that matter, FireWire only. The new FCP 6 douse not even support it.

You will have to pull the video off the disc and convert it with a program like mpegstreamclip.

There is no realtime capture for your camera.

Here is the link to MPEG Streamclip https://www.squared5.com/svideo/mpeg-streamclip-mac.html
You’ll need to load the DVD into your mac’s DVD drive and use Streamclip to extract the video/audio files.
