  The right way to offline

  Hey folks,

  Apparently I don’t really know the correct way to do an offline at 24p. If anyone knows the correct workflow for this process, please enlighten me.

  I am working on something that was shot on film, then the dailies were transfered to digibeta. While I worked with the digibeta dailies, the film was then sent off to another place to grade it in HD.

  What I did was capture the shots individually off the digi, then I ran each individual clip through cinema tools and did a reverse telecine. Now, I still don’t think I know the correct way to use this program to it’s full potential. Can I batch this process and if so what is the correct process?

  Ok, so back to the main problem. So I removed the 3:2 and ended up with 24p clips. I edited my commercial at 24p and then we received a hard drive with the DPX files on it. The Flame artist was going to do the online from these, so he asked me what the timecodes were for each shot that I used. Now I know that in a case like this you are supposed to use an EDL, but since there were only a few shots I hand wrote them down. Since the DPX files carry timecode, he was able to go to the timecodes that I had given him…but alas the timecodes were off (which I suspected). I gave him the timecode of the 24p clips, which are different than the original timecode off the digi. This is where I am confused, because in the past whenever I have had to get stuff color graded and I have been working on a 29.97 timeline all I have had to do is spit out an EDL and like magic the telecine place has no problems. But I really prefer to work in 24p, because all the work that I do is very motion gfx and 3D animation intensive, so it is helpful to stay in the same timebase the whole time.

  So, to make a long question short, what is the correct workflow if you want to work in 24p from offline digibetas, but then be able to have your EDL match up with DPX files/24p HD tapes/or film negative? I know I am skipping a crucial step, but the problem is that I never really worked as an assistant editor at a post house or anything so never really got trained properly in such matters.
