  Size question about animation directly to theater screen.

  Im making some motion graphics(no live footage recorded) that will be seen on a small scale theater screen, (not sure of the size) What project settings should i use, just the 720×480 DV?

  Yes, if you’re delevering on a standard def Video medium (DVD, Tape, etc.)

  Check or test with the projector to see if rendering progressive gives better results: it depends on your animation, and of course taste.

  If you’re hooking up the projector directly to a PC or Laptop, you could go for a larger screensize like 1024*768, but test to see if the PC can play back your movie smoothly, and check for the native resolution of the projector.

  Allow me to add:

  1. Find out what the projector’s maximum resolution is.
  2. Find out how the video will be fed to the projector because that will determine your codec and resolution for delivery. If you get to use a computer, h.264 is perfect for scalable delivery. As Flip says, you need time to experiment or at lest time to talk to other users of the same system.
  3. 640×480 is about 300,000 pixels per frame, 1080×720 is only about twice the number of pixels but imposes a geometric progression in rendering calculations as those pixels interact with other layers. A 15 minute render in DV can become 2 hours in HD. A 2 hour 3d render in DV can turn into an overnighter in 3d for HD.
