  mixing HD & SD material

  Have some footage shot HD, some other footage shot with an SD camcorder, both at 30fps.

  Can I use both in a single project? Working with FCP 5.1.4 on a Powerbook G4, 2 gigs ram. If so, what would be the best way to set up the project? (Assuming HD 1080i30p?)

  Also, the HD material was shot 16:9, the SD material was shot 4:3. Can I get around this? Basically, I want to use the SD material as a picture-in-picture enhancement for the HD stuff and wondering if the aspect ratios would be compatible or if something is going to get squeezed along the way.

  You can do this, but you might end up rendering quite a bit. If your HD footage is in the HDV codec, you’ll have hours and hours of rendering and you’ll get quite frustrated. If you do have HDV footage, then I’d convert it to some other format for editing.

  It would be worth noting that you’ll probably have a lot less rendering if you were using FCP6.

  so should I set up the project as HD, then import the SD material into it?

  Or the other option, what would I convert the HD material to? And how would I go about it?
