Best capture format
Hello, I’m Freddy Allen and I’ve been a long time reader but this is my first post. (My questions are always answered in the forums before I need to post) Thanks.
I’m currently working on a Horror movie in NJ and we’re shooting with the Viper camera onto HDCAM-SR tapes for our masters, cloning to HDCAM-SR tapes with L.U.T.s applied for our on-line and then getting dupes of those onto HDCAM tapes for our offline edit.
I’m using a Sony J-H3 to capture into FCP Studio 2 through an AJA Kona 3 LHE card on a Mac Pro with an X-serve 4.1 TB.
My question is what would be the best suitable capture settings to use for the offline edit?

Offline I would go with either ProRes or DVCPro HD. DVCPro HD is a smaller file size so depending on your storage situation, you might want to go that route.
The good thing about DVCPro HD is you can make some really good color correction changes and they should hold just about right for the final.

We do a lot of HD offline editing in DVCPROHD. It’s a great codec for editing. With the Kona 3 card, you might consider cross converting from 1080/24p to 720/24p when you capture it.
It still maintains a nice looking image while cutting the file sizes from about 13MB/sec for 1080/24p down to about 6MB/sec for 720/24p. But if you want to keep the 1080 image because you have enough storage, that would work just fine too.

Thanks so much for your help. Everything is up and running smoothly. I chose Kona DVCPROHD codec because I can afford the extra space.
