  • layered Photoshop file becomes flattened when I import into FCS2

Posted by Todd Reid on August 21, 2007 at 7:08 pm

I’m at a client’s facility and whenever I import photoshop files (with multiple layers) it treats them as only one layer (flattened). If I import the same file into motion, I can see the layers.

So I know what your thinking…just use Motion. I am.
But that doesn’t satisfy my curiosity.

Is there a setting or something that would address this?

What kind of layers? Are they effects and adjustment layers? Flatten those all out first, then you should be able to bring in flat uneffected layers.

If you double click the psd, it doesn’t open a timeline?

That is correct. If I double click, it acts as if its a graphic.

The layers are all individual layers, no adjustment or effects.
Just basic 10 layer psd files, but FCS2 thinks it doesn’t have layers, yet it does.

Perhaps you saved it funky out of Photoshop?

When you do a SAVE AS on the layered file in Photoshop (I always save my Photoshop files as TIFFs) be sure the “Layers” box is checked. SImple as that.

Created and saved on a PC?

    You may have hit it!

The file was created by this client’s graphic artist.
It is a properly saved photoshop file that includes layers.
In the original post, I explain that it opens fine in Motion.
So it is not the file itself, but I’m thinking its relationship with FCS2.

When I go back tomorrow, I will see if it was a pc and report back.

    Thanks all for your input.

The 16 bit thing has bit me before too. Double check that as well.
