Log and Capture
Posted by Sven Pannell on August 19, 2007 at 10:42 pmI am a very new Final Cut Pro user. I have 25 hours of DV footage I wish to capture in order to cut a trailer for a documentary and attract post-production funding. However, I can’t seem to get underway.
My system =
Sony PDX-10 camera and Mini DV tapes recording in PAL
PowerBook G4 Mac running 10.4.9
Final Cut Studio 5I think the “Basic Setup” in FCP needs a firewire connection, but my camera doesn’t look like it has this as an output. Can I make it all work on USB port and cable?

August 19, 2007 at 10:59 pmAccording to this article it would seem this camera does have a firewire port. Keep looking. I’m sure there is a 4 pin firewire/i-link somewhere. You should use the easy setup DV Pal 50i

I’m sure it’s called “iLink” on that camera. Sony, of course, has to have their own term for Firewire. It’s probably a small 4pin connector.

August 20, 2007 at 9:50 amThanks very much, both. Yes, firewire = iLink, I now realise. And the cable doesn’t come with the Sony but is an optional extra. I now have one and the camera can communicate with FCP.
However…
1. I cannot listen to the audio as I play and capture through FCP even though it plays on the camera speaker, and,
2. There is a terrible ‘rippling’ occuring (broad, dark, strobing lines) most noticeably around the edge line of a subject, whenever there is camera movement or subject motion within frame. I have tried a variety of different “Basic Settings” but nothing seems to alleviate the problem.
Again, system is Sony DSR-PDX10P recording to Mini DV, Final Cut Pro 5 and PowerBook G4 running 10.4.10.
Again, any advice for a newbie would be much appreciated.

Hit the “Preview” button in the Log and CApture window.

That’s interlaced video playing on your computer screen. This is normal as your computer screen is progressive. You will need an external monitor to properly view your material as you edit. FCP purposely degrades the image in the Log and Capture, Viewer and Canvas displays because it is expected that you will work with an external monitor during editing.

Hey Sven, it’s Aaron. I’m rarely in this forum, but it’s a great one. All advice you’ve received so far is spot on.

August 24, 2007 at 10:15 amBrilliant. I can’t hide anywhere, can I?
I was just thinking this afternoon about you and whether I could afford to send these tapes to you and for you to send me back a doco! Perhaps it’s time to talk, although I am enjoying the rather steep learning curve.
Not in LA at the mo … in New Zealand. Will send you an email
Sven
