    Hello all,

I am using FCP 5.1.4. on a macbook pro, I have 30GB spare on the hard drive, and an external 500 GB hard drive through firewire where my vision files are. I have the first scratch disk set up on the laptop hard drive. I am cutting a show reel so that means I have footage from various camera formats.

The settings I have for my sequence are – 1920 x 1080. Aspect ratio HDTV 1080i (16:9). Pixel aspect ratio square. field dominance none. timebase 25 fps (pal). Compressor, uncompressed.

First problem, every clip I bring onto the timeline needs to be rendered. In previous versions and reels I have cut before did not require the vision to be rendered unless I altered it.

second, it keeps dropping frames on playback. Is it because I am working off an external Hard drive? Is there a setting I am not aware of?

I hope I have given enough info,

    Thanks,

    Graeme

If your clips all need rendering, they are all a different size/compression/frame rate from the sequence. Check the clip info, and compare it to your sequence, and you will find the difference.

Sorting this may also solve your dropped frames, otherwise it is because your external drive cannot cope with your HD clips. Without knowing what format you are working in (as opposed to the frame size) we can’t help you further, but there are few HD formats playable via FW on a MBP – HDV and DVCPrroHD (at a pinch) spring to mind. Did you try to set your sequence settings manually? Just keep to the easy setups, and match your sequence whatever you’ve digitised.

    How are you digitising?

The footage is 16mm (DVcam transfer). HVX202 and XDcam.

Am I reading this right, that working from an external hard drive will not be possible? The laptop only has a internal of 112GB.

    Thanks,

    Graeme

With the HVX files, I imported through the panasonic P2 option. Then I imported the mov. files that were made from the panasonic import into the sequence with the previous mentioned settings.

Other formats, I have the mov. files of.

    Thank you,

    Graeme

When I click on clip settings in the bin, it says “no items have files that are applicable to this operation”.

    Hope that helps.

    Ok… we’re getting closer….

we know that you have DVCAM, and XDCAM (is that DV, IMX30, IMX40 or IMX50), and what about the HVX200 – are they DVCPro, DVCPro50, or DVCProHD 720p.

    We need more specifics.

But I can tell you that you cannot mix formats using FCP 5.1.4. Once you set your sequence, and you place footage on the timeline, footage that doesn’t match that setting will need to be rendered.

Only until you upgrade to FCP6, will you be allowed to mix formats on the timeline and play in somewhat realtime. But eventually, you still need to render all of this.

The other question that comes to mind is…. what kind of firewire drive do you have? fw400 or fw800? What else is hooked up to your firewire? a deck, AJA IO or IO HD?

I don’t care how much of a magician anyone is, there is no conceivable way you are going to do Uncompressed 1080 HD from the internal drive of a MacBook Pro.

use the scroll bar at bottom of your browser and scroll to the “compressor” column, this will tell you what codecs you have. “Items Properties” (located right under “Clip Settings”) will also give you this info.

Also, in general it is not recommended that you keep media on the same drive as your system.
You should be ok with your external drives, especially if you have FW800. There are some concerns with “sharing” a FW bus with another device (like aja, harddrive or camera), but many people continue to do this with no problem. It is recomended use only one device per bus (most computers ship with 1 bus, even though they have multiple ports).

As mentioned above, when mixing codecs you will eventually have to render, so don’t sweat it. FCP6 allows realtime (-ish) playback, but before output will need to render everything.

Set up your sequence codec to match the codec of the footage that you have the most of. This should minimize the amount of rendering that you will need to do.

    hope this helps
