    I’m currently running a quad 2.5 GHz Powermac G5 with 4.5 GB DDR2 SDRAM.

    PCI-e model.
    Final Cut Studio 2 most updated.
    AJA Kona 3 Card with breakout box.
    Kano 5 bay 2.5 TB eSATA which will maintain speeds of around 220Mbps.

    I know that I can capture uncompressed with the setup, but I would prefer to use ProRes and save space. I’ve read conflicting things. Some say you need the new intel based macs to utilize pro res… others say you don’t.

    any links or threads that will shed some light on this?

    So there would be no benefit cutting in a ProRes line if I’ve already captured the Varicam footage via firewire. The ProRes benefits are only apparent if i CAPTURE uncompressed to a ProRes timeline? Is this correct? The ProRes compresses the footage 4:2:2 and doesn’t use as much room as an uncompressed timeline.

    Well, not necessarily. With FCP6, you can capture DVCPro HD and render to ProRes as an intermediary codec. As long as you capture ProResHQ, it’ll be 10 bit rendering which is cool. It’d be best to capture as ProRes off the bat as ProResHQ is 10 bit and also full raster (1280×720 as opposed to 960×720 native DVCPro HD).

    DVCPro HD and ProRes are both 4:2:2 codecs, so no real difference there. ProRes will be a bigger file than DVCPro HD but no where near the size of Uncompressed HD.

    1. So when you capture uncompressed or ProRes you actually get MORE RESOLUTION and MORE COLOR SPACE as well? Correct?

    2. If “regular” compressed varicam/hvx is 8 bit 4:2:2 color space then what is the “regular” dvc-pro hd final cut TIMELINE. Is the timeline not 4:2:2 colorspace (non-ProRes that is)??
    If so than what’s the point of 4:2:2 color space if it gets put into a lesser timeline.

    Looks like I’m going to have to recapture the footage to get what i want.

    Which do you think looks better.

    10bit 4:2;2 ProRes

    or

    10bit 4:2:2 Uncompressed DVC-PRO HD

    BETTER color space…correct. 10-bit vs 8-bit.

    The regular FCP DVCPRO HD timeline settings are EXACTLY THE SAME as the source footage. 8-bit 4:2:2. The timeline is a 4:2:2 color space. The advantage to ProRes is that it is a 10-bit color space. Still 4:2:2, but 10-bit. BETTER for color correction.

    No such thing. Either DVCPRO HD (which is 8-bit 4:2:2…and compressed in the DVCPRO HD codec), or uncompressed 10-bit 4:2:2.

    More resolution, yes. 920×720 vs 1280×720. Same color space (Rec709) but you get more colors to work with (millions vs trillions)

    DVcPro HD = 4:2:2, ProRes = 4:2:2 It does not get put in a lesser timeline in terms of color sampling.

    There is no such thing as 10 bit uncompressed DVCPro HD. DVCPro HD and 10 bit are different codecs.

    It’s hard to see a difference with 10 bit Uncompressed and 10bit Pores (HQ) if that’s what you mean, if you have the drive speed and space, 10bit Uncompressed is pretty much the best you can get with a 4:2:2 codec and video.

    So for uncompressed i need a hard drive that’ll maintain speeds of 220 Mbps correct?
    I have a 2.5 terabyte hardware raid that can do that… so I should be good.

    Well, Jeremy did answer that one already…and yes. BUT…your original footage was 960×720, so having it now 1280×720 doesn’t really do TOO much. But, as stated…you have a better color space and better resolution to color correct in. The footage doesn’t suddenly become BETTER or CLEARER when you transcode or capture as ProRes.

    That’s for ProResHQ (220megabits per second) for 10 bit uncompressed HD you will need around 200 MegaBYTES (big difference with a similar. name).

    720p uncompressed you will need less than that. 720p24 you will need around 50MegaBYTES per second. 100 or so for 720p 59.94.
