  • Rendering at Higher DPI for Print ??

Posted by Bernardo Alvarez on March 5, 2007 at 7:43 pm

is this even possible or is it a stupid question ??

I am designing opneing graphics for a show, and the client wants the print designers to follow my lead in the design. I did most of my design in after effects at 720×486. it involves Particular, 3D stroke….heavy keyframing, so I would love to NOT have to rebuild everything if not necessary….but first…is it even possible to render out higher DPI in after effects for print purposes ? what they want is a Photoshop file, with all my layers separated so they can use them as elements. My thought is they should do what they are getting paid for and recreate the look based on reference files i give them, but…they want a PSD….

    HEEEEEEEEEEELLLP !

    thx.

[balvarez] “is it even possible to render out higher DPI in after effects for print purposes ?”

No. AE internally always assumes 72 dpi and there is no way to change that. Rebuilding your comp at a much larger size is the only option. But I concur with you: They get paid for doing the posters or whatever, so they better be the ones doing it.

I’ve been in on similar projects. Photoshop guys don’t know squat about video and they cannot be taught.

Find the most reasonable member of their team and bring her over for espresso and crumpets at your shop. Ask her to bring her laptop. Show here how your comp is created and how your exports are created. Be patient.

Well, first you need to know at what resolution and size they are requesting. I have sometimes dragged a comp into a new much larger comp and scaled everything up. I have even saved out PICT with alpha’s so I could re-layer them in Photoshop. Usually only a few layers are necessary. And I always suggest they set their own type. I provide Font info.

Sometimes the challenge is that they are designing for a vertical layout and we work in a horizontal layout.

But for the most part scaling up a comp these days seems to hold up pretty well. As far as plugins go, most of ours move, so for print it is subjective which frame is best….I will usually provide an alternate.

This will be more and more requested as we move into HD. I don’t think anyone can expect a 300 dpi 9 inch by 6 inch file. I usually get the final width as close to 1500-2000 pixels as I can. That usually suffices for most of these video to print requests.

    Scaling up might be useful.
The Magnify filter in After Effects runs an adequate resampler that is far superior to Scale.
Your PS people, bless their little hearts, probably have Genuine Fractals available.
