External Video Problems
Hallo FCP Forum,
I have some question concerning the External Video Option in FCP…i am editing various projekts in various formats, from HD to PAL DV, but only one format per projekt i have a mac pro 2,6 with 6 GB RAM, an NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT card, and 2 16×9 monitors…i often use the VIEW-EXTERNAL VIDEO_ALL FRAMES feature when i have a client. i worked with a DVCPRO HD 25p 720 projekts with one client using the ALL FRAMES feature, he left, i closed the projekt opened another projekt with after effects animated video in PAL animation codec and the ALL FRAMES didnt work…later i went back to the DVCPRO 25p 720 projekt and check my all frames feature and that too didnt work…i went back through old projekts were i had used the feature and they were faulty. the images are displayed like the single frame option and not the all frame option…i have recently opened a tiff sequence, HD size, and tried the feature again and it worked, but now i am working with a pal DV projekt and it doesnt work…does anyone have a clue as to what is going on with my machine?i cannot explain it….have a overlooked something?

aaronps- my media files are saved on a 1 tb raid made up of 2 500gb maxtor drives.

Always start by choosing the correct Easy Setup for the type of video that you will be capturing and editing. That keeps it simple. When you open a 720 25P project, choose the DVCProHD 720P 25 Easy Setup. If you are working in DV, choose the DV PAL setup. All your system hardware will be set up to display that format correctly. If you put video of a different format on the timeline you may need to render it in order to play it.
For video, you will always use “All Frames.”
According to your profile your system does not have a true reference video monitor. The Syncmaster monitors are only showing you Final Cut’s preview, not a true video or “broadcast” output. If you are dealing with the world of broadcast television, you should have a video monitor.

maybe i didnt make myself clear enough, but the easy setup and so on is not a problem. i edit fine with the various formats, its simply desktop preview that is giving me problems…i work a lot at home and go to a big editing suits with all the referance monitors and so on to do the finishing, my problem is only the desktop preview…i am switched to all frames, but it doesnt playback at real time. it will show the current frame when i switch to it and when i hit play the sound plays back but the video only shows a freeze frame, then when i hit stop it is updated to the current frame…so it is functioning like single frame although it is switched to all frames…that is what i do not understand….

Sorry–didn’t mean to tell you stuff you already know. Could it be an extreme dropped frames issue, related to media drives filling up? See if your user prefs, general, shows that “report dropped frames on playback” is turned on. Check to make sure all your media is on the proper scratch disk instead of system disk? I haven’t run into this problem, so I’m fishing for an answer.

I have the same problem. I am using FCP 6 on a G5 dual core tower with 8 gigs of ram. Everytime I play the external monitor it only plays a single frame, but the audio continues fine. i put my settings from the view menu on “all frames” and set my canvas to “fit in window” and have set my A/V setting properly, but I still get the single frame. The project is 960 x 720 native 16×9, I don’t know if that makes a difference. I used the HVX 200 camera using the P2 cards. I tried switching machine one with Tiger and the other with Leopard and still no luck. Can someone help me?
