    Hi,

I am used to Avid and have recently taken a job that requires I use Final Cut Pro. I had no problem figure out the differences in terms of editing, but now that it’s time to output, I am a bit stuck.

The company needs me to post a QuickTime version on their ftp for download- it’s a 5 minute video and it’s need to be around 15 megs…but decent quality. I have been trying different settings for the past couple of hours and if it’s small enough it looks pretty crappy. If it looks decent, the smallest I can get is 32 megs.

They also need me to make a DVD with the best quality possible. I am used to exporting Same As Source in Avid but am not sure what the best option is if I am just going to use it in iDVD or DVD Studio Pro.

Thanks so much for your help,
    Lori

Just use Compressor for the two tasks. You got a bunch of pre-sets that cover almost all the needs. For your web movie try the QT7 Compatible. They are based in the H264 codec and the picture is very good. For your DVD try any of the set-ups according with the lenth of your film.
If you need more help, just post.
    Cheers,

Thanks so much. I am trying one of the mpeg-2s for my DVD. The only problem was I couldn’t find the QT7 compatible. There weren’t any QT options in the presets…any other suggestions? Also, do you have any good settings for exporting a high-res Quicktime out of Final Cut. I have Quicktime Pro so I have dozens of options…I just keep getting so-so results.
    Thanks again for your help.

Lori for you quick time version I am curious if you just went to file export quicktime movie? This usually generates a pretty high resolution quicktime file and then you can use IDVD or Studio Pro to compress it on to a DVD.

Export your sequence using self-contained movie (it’s all in the manual). Hit the options buttons and make sure you’ve got the same format/coec selected that you are working in. on your timeline. This will create a continuous movies that contains clones of your sequence’s files.

IMport this self-contained movie into DVDSP.

You CAN use Compressor (or any other encoder) to create MPEG2 for you but you might as well just let DVDSP do it for you. The defaults are excellent, generally. If you need more control, you will need to pop the Help system open to the secitons of tweaking the encoder by using compression markers and some other tools. Not fun.

This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

Thanks so much for everybody’s help. I did export as a movie (self-contained). It looks pretty good but it kind of looks interlaced…is there anyway to de-interlace it without going through something like Mpeg Streamclip or other application? This is a 5-minute video and it seems to take hours to do anything. I don’t know if there is something off in my settings but it seems like a lot of wasted time just to make a DVD. Anyways, thanks for everyone’s help. Any further tips on the de-interlacing would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Lori

    Lori,
The interlacing problem can arise from other elements appart than from setting wrong field-order of a sequence or the footage. Have you move or animated any interlaced footage in your movie? When you reposition footage in FC, up or down, you must do it always an even number of pixels. If you move your image an odd number of pixels up or down the effect is the same than if you set the wrong order of the fiels in your footage. You can move it right or left freely, but not up and down.
With the Compresor pre-sets you can not have any interlacing problem as long as your got not interlacing problems. You have to make sure that your FC sequence and the exported movies (refference or sel-contained, the same) have not such problem, The only way to be sure about is with an interlaced monitor. A tv conected to the camera is enough.
Other way to test if your .mov have been rendered in the correct order is with a program that allow you to avance the movie in 1 Field steps. You can do it with Shake or AE.
You talk about de-interlacing the movie. This will affect depending of the kind of images of your film. You can do it in FC. Drop a de-interlacing filter and set in “Sequence setting” the field-order to NONE.
    Hope this helps.
