  HDV to Youtube (staying widescreen)

  Hey, thanks for reading this. I don’t have much experience with FCP. Before my most recent project, I’ve used it only once.

  I’m creating a music video that the band wants to get onto youtube; the problem I’m having is this. Most of my footage is HDV or DV and I’ve been working in HDV timeline/sequence. When I export it using compressor to get the size it’ll need to be at it becomes 4:3. I really need it to stay in widescreen. How can I export or create it so that I can get it smaller and also keep it widescreen?

  Rob,

  You can’t put a true widescreen movie on YouTube. You have to letterbox it. Just put your final show into a 4×3 timeline and FCP will do it for you.

  If you want that when you export a 16×9 movie will be displaied as 16×9, in Compressor in the Geometry tab of the Inspector you must check “Constrain to display aspect: 16×9”. But this is in QT. If as Chris says Youtube do not display 16×9, the only way is the one that hi points.

  there is another simpler way. just export using quicktime conversion, but in the size options choose a custom setup with a 16:9 ratio. for example 480×270. although the video is not letterboxed in quicktime viewer youtube does display the letterboxing, and so the correct aspect ratio

  That is an easy method. Reduce the high of the picture to the 75% and will get 16×9. Although you will lose definition because you end-up with less pixels.

  Alright, thanks guys. All great input. I went with what you suggested davebrandt. I think 480×270 is the best way to keep everything important in the shots even if it could have more pixels.

  Gotta love the cow. Just wish I’d remembered to set the email alerts. I only found your comments when I was on google still looking for the solution.

  Hi
  I’m having the same problem, trying to export HDV material for YouTube from FCP 7, maintaining the 16:9 ratio. Every sequence setting I try seems to result in distorted footage.
  Can anyone provide the correct settings or process to export 16:9 HDV material that will display properly and be suitable for YouTube?
