Is it possible to attach a layer object to an open mask on another layer in AE 6.5?

I know you can do this with text, but I can’t seem to find a way to do it with any other shape or layer.

If not, then tell me if its possible to simulate this in some other way.

I’m not sure what you mean by “attach” or “open mask” but are you talking about track mattes maybe? With a trackmatte you can use a layer’s alpha channel or luminosity to mask another layer.

No. Mask node positions are inaccessible to expressions as are other mask properties. If you have a simple straight line, use the beam effect or follow my World Map tutorial which uses long thin solids.
