  what is ‘general error (41)’?

  have projects on external sata drives and, after
  a system rebuild, am getting this error in trying
  to open existing projects.

  When I have experienced this error message, trashing my FCP user prefereces has fixed the issue.

  I would also suggest you repair permissions. If neither of these work, try deleting the project render files as a more drastic measure.
