  Batch Capture & Losing Synch — am I doing something wrong in preferences?

  Hi All,

  I tried posting this in the regular basic FCP thread but haven’t received any answers so I hope you don’t mind my posting here with the “Big Dogs” for help.

  I’m digitizing in minidv media into FCP6 and am running into a synch problem. I digitized minidv footage in and when I checked it, it was out of synch due to dropped frames (part of the video track just froze during capture while the audio continued to be captured which threw it all out of synch.) Anyway, I thought I’d simply relog and recapture the tape but when I went to capture it, I got the following message:

  “Warning: You are about to capture Drop Frame media from a device currently detecting Non-Drop Frame media. If you proceed, you may experience changes in logged in and out points, problems relinking media or removal of master clip relationships.”

  I’m interpreting that this means I’ve got a preference set up incorrectly in FCP that’s telling it I want to capture Drop Frame media when I actually want to capture Non Drop frame, right? I’m using the devault DVNTSC in the project setup and in the editing tab of preferences I’ve chosen (under the BWF Import section) NTSC Default Time Code: Non-Drop.

  What am I doing wrong on this? I’ve just begun the task of digitizing tons of hours into FCP6 for this project and only ran into this problem on reel 4 (not 1-3 or 5 or 6). Is it just a bad tape that I need to dub onto a new tape?

  I’d sure appreciate some help on this one guys!

  Toni,

  Where have you been? Haven’t seen you since NAB!

  I believe the problem is the camera/deck. Just recently, my deck (DSR-11) has been doing the same thing. I do not have the Drop-frame/non-drop frame message. It happens every now and then.

  What I do is find the frame right before the video freezes and capture from 10 seconds before that point to the end of the clip. I’ll then do a match frame and insert it into my timeline.

  Thanks so much for the info (although I’m bummed because it sounds like I may need to buy a deck — ouch!). Yes, we will totally catch up at the Races. Nick and I had a blast at NAB with you guys. Thanks also for answering so quickly, I’m always so embarrassed to ask stuff like this because it seems so trivial to what you are all doing.

  In the log and capture window, set your device control to firewire NDF if in fact your tapes are NDF.

  Hi All,

  I just wanted to close the circuit on this question in case anyone is searching for the answer through old posts as I often do. Steve was correct; something was going on with my GL2 communicating with FCP6. I redigitized the footage using a much cheaper camera I had and it came out in perfect synch and did not freeze on the picture at all.

  Thanks also to Jeremy for the advice. I’m embarrassed to say I didn’t really know the difference between drop frame and non drop frame so I scouted around online and confirmed the minidv footage was drop frame and I did (thankfully) have FCP6 set up correctly, so I was probably getting that error message because the GL2 was miscommunicating with FCP6.
