  • AE 7 crashes when importing QT movies

    After a complete rebuild of my Quad 2.5 G5, 4.5 gig DDR2 SDRAM, NVIDIA GeForce 6600, OS 10.4.8, QT 7.1.3, AE 7.0.1
I am still crashing everytime I import or drag QT to my project window.
Other sources work fine, PSD, AI, etc..
If I render something and set the post render action to import, AE crashes.
So I’m convinced it has something to do with importing QT movies.
These QTs are not corrupted as I am using them at another work station and no problem.

This was the problem before the rebuild so for the life of me I can’t understand why this would still happen.
Other aspects of the computer work fine, Photoshop, AI, only After Effects is giving me problems.

Anyone ever have such a vexing problem?

    Could this be hardware related?

    Thanks so much for feedback.

what codec are you rendering to and then importing? or is it any codec?

it sounds like a ae-qt problem, but have you done the usual repair permissions and a hardware test? you could also trash the ae prefs file.

I’m not too sure what happened as it is a work computer that I had not worked on for a while. A freelancer added a script to allow background rendering in AE while still working. That script is no longer on the machine and thus I doubt that is the problem.

Any codec any size movie, I use QT 7.0.1 on the other machine and it works fine.

This happened to me…I upgraded my video card and it went away. I believe your card is approved though.

i have qt7.1.3 and ae7.0.1 running on 2 similar g5s (ati video cards, the only real difference) at work without any import issues. that’s why i was curious about the codec, thinking it may be a corrupt codec.

one of our g5s had random crashes that i finally tracked to a bad ram module, i didn’t discover that until i ran hardware test.

Well, I trashed QT pref and now no crash on imports. Going to try a hardware test to check for bad ram.

interesting that a qt pref file would create problems when importing into another piece of software. also that it persisted after a reinstall of the system software…
