  • Mac Pro Optical Output doesn’t work

Posted by Jeff Carrion on July 16, 2007 at 2:23 pm

Sorry, I’m in a posting mood this morning…

    Anyway, got a brand-spankin-new Mac Pro 2.66Ghz; 1GB; 500GB; 500GB ext LaCie eSATA; ATI Radeon X1900; FCS2.

In STP when I tried to setup for viewing external video through firewire I got a message saying that my scratch disk wasn’t fast enough to output video and audio. So the video plays back through FW but the audio still comes through the little Mac Pro speaker.

No big deal, I thought, I’ll just get an optical cable and hook up my new Behringer MS20 monitors to the optical output on the back of the Mac Pro. (The MS20’s have a dedicated, SPDIF compatible, Toslink, input in the back on a seperate channel) I’ll just switch the sound preferences to Digital Out and be good to go right? Wrong!

I can’t get and sound from the optical out! Is this a known issue? It won’t work with anything. STP, iTunes, DVD player, system sounds, whatever.

Please help. I’d hate to have to go and buy a sound card when my brand new, very expensive, Mac Pro should have a perfecly good optical output built right in.

Have you checked to see if your monitors are switched to Optical Input? There is a switch on the back of these monitors for which digital input you want.

Make sure that the Mac Pro didn’t reset itself to an analog output. That can happen.

[Wayne Carey] “Have you checked to see if your monitors are switched to Optical Input?”

Yes, I have flipped that switch back and fourth a zillion times, no dice.

Huh? What I’ll do is open iTunes, start a song playing, open Sys Prefs, and toggle the audio output back and fourth from the Mac speaker to digital. It plays through the speaker but not the optical out.

BTW-there IS a red light comming through the optical cable into the Behringers.

I think at this point, I’d call Behringer and see if something is wrong with the monitors.

I have never had the optical output work for me either. I have a MOTU interface that does not work as well as a Focusrite Octopre with adat card = no dice. I have NEVER heard of anyone using the optical outs that did not use a card. YMMV.
