FCP for long form
Posted by Chris Baker on July 16, 2007 at 1:31 pmSo I will be making the switch from Avid to FCP but one problem remains. I have read some reviews that say it can’t handle long form the way Avid can then I read otherwise. Which is it?!?

I’ve been cutting on Avid, Media 100 and FCP since about 1993. All handle long form just fine. I have delivered 30 second to 3 hour projects on FCP. Don’t know what kind of “issues” you’re concerned about, but FCP is fine for long form.
Now if you don’t know how to get started on organization in FCP, you really should pick up Shane Ross’ “Getting Organized in Final Cut Pro” DVD.

July 16, 2007 at 2:16 pmThanks! I’ll have to look into that DVD. I have a feeling the review and the other user review on the Apple site didn’t quite understand the organization process.

It’s available right here on the Cow along with many other great titles.

July 16, 2007 at 3:35 pmThat DVD would be perfect for Avid converts (me being one…well, I am STILL working with an Avid. Cutting a show right now on one). Because FCP is very different than an Avid and treats files very differently. If you try to tackle a show using the techniques you use on an Avid, you will get frustrated rather easily. FCP has a different approach, but that approach works well. Thus far I have cut 3 two hour History Channel shows with it, and several one hours. It works.

July 16, 2007 at 11:48 pmI no longer use Avid every day, because I don’t own one. When I have to do long form with FCP, I do miss some of Avid’s features, at least the way I remember them. But if I had to edit a long form in Avid again, I’m sure I would find just as many things I miss about FCP’s workflow. You can’t have it all in one app, I guess.

July 16, 2007 at 11:56 pmAnd there are many things I miss on the Avid when I go back to FCP.
They both have strong points. And I like and dislike both…hee.
