  • Gamma shift between viewer and canvas?

Posted by Mike Witting on July 13, 2007 at 9:48 pm

I have a RGB DPX file in my time line(not rendered) and the same DPX file loaded in the viewer. the sequence and the clip in the viewer are parked on the same frame but when I toggle between the viewer and canvas I notice a gamma shift. I know that there is a gamma shift when bringing RGB files into the yuv color space but this seemed odd.

anyone experience this or know if FCP only compensates for gamma in one of the windows?

    Thanks

I think you’ve answered your own question here. If you put an RGB file into a YUV color space there will be a shift alright… Might just adjust it with a gamma filter or color correction filter and move on…?

There is a gamma shift adjustment setting in FCP. In the editing tab of preferences there’s a selector that lets you set the gamma for importing importing. It’s specifically for this purpose. Do a test to see which setting works best for your material.

    All the best,

Sorry for the zombie post resurrection, but I’m having a similar problem in FCE. The problem is that cannot find the setting that affects gamma importing. I have looked where Tom (and many others) suggested, but it’s not there in FCE. Is it hidden somewhere else?

I have the same problem (darkened gamma) happening in MPEG streamclip as well. I’m importing video from a PC, TriCaster to be specific, so I know this is all my fault. Is there a selector I can use in MPEG Streamclip to stop it from darkening all my videos?

    Help!?!
