  preparing for video display

  I don’t know when to turn it off, but whenever i move clip(s) in the timeline, i almost every
  time get the small window saying “preparing for video display”. Usually it takes a few seconds, but sometimes also 15 or more. This became quite annoying, because it appears
  almost on every move of the clips i do.

  I use FCP Pro 5.1 and Cinema Display 23″ and i don’t use any external monitor.

  Does anyone have any suggestions on where to turn this off, because it is driving me crazy.
  I woudn’t care if i would have 5 or more video tracks and did a move of a pile of clips, but this is happening when i have one or two video tracks.

  Any suggestions?

  How much RAM do you have installed? Usually, this behavior is caused by not haveing enough, or enough assigned to FCP.

  Hey,

  I have 8 GB of RAM in my G5. I would have to check how much i have assigned to FCP.
  Probably this settng is in FCP? How much would you suggest to assign to FCP.
  When i work in FCP, i usually don’t have any other software running.

  Look in FCP’s system settings for the memory allocation. Take it to the max (100%)
  If you’re working with stills a lot, assigning more memory to stills will help (in that same tab of the FCP system settings).

  If it’s set that way, might restart the computer. If that fails, post back.
