Are we getting left behind?
Posted by Eric Klassen on July 7, 2007 at 9:44 pmI made the switch from Premier about five years ago and haven’t looked back since. I’m not by any means a master in any of the apps that come with the FCP package, but I can flow and I’m happy for the most part. But now Encore is coming out as an app that can make fully functional flash web sites with it’s interface? I’m sorry, but that straight up rocks. Please say something that will make me want to stay with Apple’s apps.
Thanks,

July 7, 2007 at 10:00 pmFlash display of a DVD interface, while indeed very cool, may not be of major significance for many users’ workflow; but if this is a really important feature for you, then you’ll have to return to Premiere.

I don’t really need this feature but I do need the Blu-Ray authoring feature. So I’ve ordered the Production Premium package from Adobe and will run it alongside the Apple apps.
Why do you have to choose between the two? I run Photoshop, After Effects and now I’ll have Encore and Illustrator to add to the mix. If you need the features of both companies, then purchase the products you need.

here here,
and the cost to get the rest of the suite is about the same as it is to update Photoshop and AE alone – Flash, Acrobat, Encore and Sound booth tossed in.
Encore is currently a superior production tool for the day to day user, create the content and deliver to far more varieties than with DVDSP

July 8, 2007 at 3:22 amIt has to feel that way doesn’t it? 2 NABs ago the rumor was FCP extreme. Last NAB the rumor was FCP extreme. Then, the update. Well, no update for FCP actually, but pretty extreme update to motion, and a good update to Soundtrack. I guess if you feel like learning Color, then relearning it after the change the interface, then color is a cool addition. But one I didn’t desire. So if one is jumping into FCS, 6 is a pretty cool complete package. But if you’re a hard core FCP user and the other apps are extra goodies, this “update” is pretty lackluster. With so much to be improved on in the heart of the package, they did seem to leave it behind.
And I don’t think you’ll see Apple creating any Flash tools. Since that’s a competing interactive and video platform, they don’t seem too hip about endorsing it or paying for the codecs.

Not sure the interface is going to change. Hopefully it won’t. It’s a very efficient interface as is.

July 8, 2007 at 2:29 pmI would think Apple would at least visually change it to appear like apple programs. I think that may be what’s throwing people. Functionally could remain the same, but tabs, checkboxes, dialogs, etc would change. And things like finding a drive will most likely come around. Apple users don’t look for a drive under the directory “volumes.”

July 8, 2007 at 2:55 pmThe interface needs a lot of work. As Bret said the file structure needs to conform to the File Browser layout used in many applications. Is here really only one level of undo?

July 9, 2007 at 3:50 amI would like to think I could work in both program packages, but my fear is that it will interrupt work flow by doing so. If it’s possible to use FCP and import into Encore, that’s great. But I have a sneaky suspicion that the work flow will be best by working in one. And as the apps evolve, I can only imagine those work flows becoming more and more dependent upon the accompanying apps provided in the package.
I love adobe. The question is really about will I be making a mistake if I switch my editing/sound needs over to the Premier family, or does it not really matter. Having the flash web site functionality is something I’ve been looking for for a long time. I’m really excited to play around with it.
Thanks,

Both apps are Quicktime based, so yes they completely work together. Export a Quicktime movie from FCP, import to Encore. Or use compressor to create an MPEG-2, Import into Encore. The only thing you can’t do is simply send an FCP timeline to Encore, but that’s no problem.
FCP, After Effects and Photoshop have worked together for years. I’ve been using Adobe and Apple products interchangeably for about 7 years now. We used Adobe and Media 100 products interchangeably for about 6 years before that.

FCP for all our editing, Encore for DVD’s, Photoshop for graphics, After Effects and Motion for compositing, SoundTrack and SoundBooth for audio, Color for grading. We’re certainly going to play with Premiere to see what FCP is lacking, but we’re going to stay an FCP editing house.

< No, it's not, Walter. And, yes, it should. Just because you get it and have created a cool little (and VERY helpful, thank you) video on how to get past the first screen, doesn't imply we should tolerate Apple's bizarre violations of their own interface standards. This preponderance of weird and dramatically different interfaces, terminologies and dialog boxes within the structure of a "tightly integrated suite" is lazy and your position that Color is a professional application is somewhat elitist (and I mean that in the best way possible, Walter, there's nothing wrong with us being elitists or we wouldn't be so certain about our positions, would we?). The FUNCTIONALITY of Color should not change but its usability definitely should. And fast. These will be the issues professionals will use when arguing for switching to Adobe's suite. It really is integrated. Mostly. Sort of. Except for Flash, Illustrator, Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Premiere, they all match. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”
