  • Compressor 3 problems – artifacts

Posted by David Fortin on July 6, 2007 at 10:12 pm

Installed FCP2 on a clean HD, new MAC OX 10.9.
Having lots of problems with Compressor 3. Quits part way through. Digital artifacts in the video.
Using a single pass 6.5 setting. Same one I’ve been using for years wth great success.

I was having trouble exporting to Compressor from FCP timeline. So today I rendered 8-bit QuickTime movies. Then compressed those. In 5 out of 6 videos I had some type of digital artifcat at least once (that’s all it takes to ruin the file).

Anyone having the same type of problem? How do you get your video onto DVD to show the client without the artifacts?

I saw somebody else’s post about not doing anything else on the computer when it is compressing. I thought that was one of the things Don Peebles was pushing in his demo? Anyway, today I might have been doing some Photoshop stuff at the same time. I’m not sure about the other times I’ve had problems.

Tomorrow I’ll try compressing with nothing else open and not doing anything on the computer. Very agrivating though. Finish the show but can’t output it to DVD to show the client. And you have to watch every second of the MPEG 2 to make sure there are no artifacts. After editing the same thing for days if not weeks, that last 10 to 20 minutes of watching it again is deadly.

Thanks for any help you can provide (or words of wisdom) {or comfort}!

Panaonic DVD Recorder connected directly to my Kona 3. It’s realtime and every bit as clean as making a client copy from Compressor.

But I’m not seeing any digital artifacts on the projects that we are using Compressor for though. Is it always in the same spot or in random areas?

    hi david,
check your error logs for compressor in Console to see what’s causing it to crash. usually its a framework that’s gone corrupt. like the helium.framwork.
delete all plists and prefs and compressor and reinstall.
it could also be quicktime causing the problem. if so, again delete all plists and prefs and reinstall.
and make sure you fix disk permissions 3 times before you reinstall your apps. and fix disk permissions again after you reinstall. i’ve had to reinstall both a couple times in fcs1. but so far its been clean sailing in fcs2.

also, don’s workflow is correct if you want the utmost quality. and you can only get it if you send from final cut to compressor. but this ties up your system. i’ve talked with him on this subject and i use it if i’m not on a deadline.
the majority of the time, i export ref movies and throw them into compressor. this doesn’t tie up your system and the quality hit is usually acceptable.
but using either workflow will not produce the artifacts as you are discribing. which is why i’m thinking its quicktime or compressor that’s giving you the artifacts.

and yeah, i also have a panasonic dvd burner connected to my i/o kona 3 just like walter does when i can’t wait for compressor 😉
