I captured a DVCpro 50mbs footage with the DV50 NTSC 48k set for both the sequence and the capture. A 4:45 minute file is 1.12gb. When I open the file to play it looks choppy. Final Cut says its 29.97, but when I open it in Quicktime or After Effects the file is 16ish frames per second. I even set the play back settings to best in Quicktime and watched the fram rate as it played and it holds at about 16fps.

I put the clip on the timeline (which did not need to render) then exported the file. It looks the same, even though the frame rate is now 29.97. The image is head and shoulders and the man is talking to the camera. He has lines though his lips and eyes when they move.

I am on a Mac Pro, 8 gigs of ram, final cut 5.1.2

If there is anyone that has had this problem or can suggest anything I am all ears.

    Thanks
    Shana

How are you monitoring, computer monitor or video monitor?

I should also mention that it was shot 4:3

I am viewing it on the computer and just tested it on my NTSC monitor. On the NTSC monitor it does not not have the banding but is still choppy. It’s final output is an interactive DVD to be played on the computer.

First, don’t worry about QT’s frame rate being off, if FCP tells you the material was captured at 29.87 then believe it.

Next, always monitor using the NTSC monitor or else the interlacing will cause you to write bad things on the forum about seeing the interlace.

Finally, check in the browser to make sure that fields are set as lower first. And then render, making certain that “Full” is checked in the render dropdown.

Lower first is selcted in the sequence settings, and no render is necessary. The play back in the monitor is choppy. It looks like what I see in final cut.

I have to ask, why should I not be worried that Quicktime and AFX see and play the footage at 16fps?

[shanamchugh] “why should I not be worried that Quicktime and AFX see and play the footage at 16fps?”

QT is notoriously unreliable in this regard. I’m not certain about AE.

I just did a test and digitized the same footage to my hard drive.
    Quicktime info
Problem footage, captured to external firewire drive – 16 FPS/34.01mbs
Test footage digitized to computer 29.94 FPS/59.08mbs

On an NTSC monitor the test footage plays back fine, and the problem footage is choppy.

The settings in Final cut are the same, the only difference is the drive that the media was recorded to. Is it possible for final cut to record capture at a lower frame rate?

Thanks for the quick replies earlier. I appreciate your help.

Is the external drive formatted as FAT32 (PC drive)

Many come this way. You should always reformat for MacOS Extended.

Client said that footage on AFX was 16fps, looked myself and it is 29.97.
