To compress…or not to compress…

I am finishing up a feature length project shot on DV. I have been working in an offline environment and have the oppurtunity this weekend to start onlining the project. The facility I’m going to does not have much experience with DV (they work almost exclusively off of beta and digibeta). My question is, what is the best way to capture DV uncompressed to the kona card? The systems there are kona based FCP5’s on G5’s. Is there any way to use my dv camera as a deck and capture directly to the card? If not, is there a deck I could rent that would give me deck control and allow me to capture to the card? One tech person I spoke with recommended capturing through the G5 firewire port the normal way, then rendering the sequence out uncompresseed. I want to get as much information as possible going in. If anyone has any experience with this and could walk me through the process, I would be very grateful. -

Why in the world would you not have captured DV via FireWire going into this? You would be done, short of perhaps rendering to an uncompressed codec to preserve your graphics. Re-capturing via the Kona will buy you nothing, If your clips are indeed DV then you were onlining from the beginning anyway.

You can rent any DVCAM deck that has an SDI output and capture uncompressed using the Kona. There is an Easy Setup just for this purpose.
You can also just capture using Firewire, edit in a DV timeline, then copy paste into an uncompressed timeline for final output. This will require time and disk space for the final render of the entire timeline.
There is really no significant quality difference between the two workflows.
Keep in mind, rendering or capturing in uncompressed will be of no benefit if you are mastering back to DV or DVCAM. Everything will take the DV compression hit again when you record it. Mastering to Digibeta would make more sense.
