  sync issues with 23.98 fps

  Hi,

  I am using a G4 Powerbook, running OS 10.4.10, FCP 5.1.4.
  I am trying to capture footage that was shot 23.98 fps using a DSR-11. I was advised to set the capture presets to DV NTSC 23.98 Anamorphic. My AV device presets are at 23.98 fps as well. I have run some short tests and the footage seems to capture normally. It appears that the quicktime files are in synch. It’s only when I import and/or play them in the FCP viewer that they go out of sync. Bit by bit, I start to experience sync issues, where the image slowly becomes ahead of the audio.

  Is there some project setting I’m missing to make this footage work as it should?

  I’ve been working on this issue unsuccessfully for quite a few hours, and would appreciate any advice on this matter!

  Thanks for all the info, Dave. Will forward to my producer and find out how the footage was shot and go from there.

  Hi Dave,

  Here is what I have found out.

  The footage was shot on a DVX100A at 24pa.

  The dp suggested I edit in a 3:2 timeline with Anamorphic checked.

  Ken Stone website suggests using the DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal easy setup. The same article says that I can use any DV deck I wish, so hopefully I can still use the DSR-11.

  yeah listen to these guys. Right now I have a project, and I went in understanding it was all shot 24pA when only, about a 1/3 of it was, by asking the camera operators. I had set it up to be captured in with the 2:3:3:2 pulldown, and it reverted to 29.97 when it had timecode issues(we were under the assumption it was problems with the camera since it had issues stamping the correct timecode to tape).

  This thread is really an eye opener especially since they sort of neglected to teach this at my college.

  Quick followup question: I decided to see if 24pA footage would play/ work on a 29.97 timeline, (so when I’m done I can drop my several sequences, which obviously will be a mix of 24p and 24pA on a 29.97 timeline, into a master sequence then render it).

  Besides the rendering, it seems fine when I play it back (like the motions look right, no frame stuttering, and what not). I’m not planning to print to film, and when I export , I’ll use compressor, so my question is, will the 24pA footage def playback correctly when it has been exported to DVD? I thought it would since it had the advanced pulldown removed when captured.
