  Import error

  The error I get is this: “the AVI file is not of the expected format. (-2147205018( (53::33)” Dunno what this means, all I know it the files don’t import. Format’s clearly not an issue, since smaller files do import.

  Here’s every spec I can think of posting:

  System:
  2GHz AMD
  2Gb RAM
  Windows XP

  File Info: (shot on DVCPRO50)
  AVI extension
  Compressor: ‘dv50’, Matrox DVCPRO50

  I’m on AE pro 7. The problem only occurs with files larger than 4Gb, it seems. Smaller ones, say 3.5 Gb, import fine. It’s those 12Gb ones that simply won’t import. I’ve maxed out the memory settings, to no avail. The footage was shot DVCPRO50, captured on some guy’s Mac, then converted to AVI with the codec I mentioned above.

  I’ve tried splitting the files with software from Boilsoft (AVI Splitter Something or Other v4.28) It worked, but now I’m nervous about having lost some compression (I have no proof either way). I would simply sleep better if I could work on the original captures.

  Any ideas?

  PS Premiere Pro 1.5 won’t import them either.

  I suspect this is a limitation of the CoDec itself. I think the Matrox tools themselves use simply different routines to create those large files in the first place and somehow bypass the Windows AVI wrapper. If so, then you cannot do anything about it, but if the tools you mentioned split the file at the strict binary stream level, then there would be no degradation at all, so I wouldn’t worry.

  The splitter came with a bold heading: “No quality loss!” I guess I just have to learn to trust these guys. Fact is, I can’t see any substantial artefacts.
