Final Cut Pro(Mac) to After Effects (Pc)
Hi Everyone,
I just finished my edit on FCP and now want to take a copy of it to my special effects engineer who works with after effects on a windows pc. This copy will end up being the master copy once it is done. However, I will still have to to lay down the sound design(not ready yet). So this means, I will have to import it back again into FCP for the job and then transcode an mpg2 file for dvd burning.
What is the best file output option for this workflow ? Because I work with macs, I have no idea what sort of file he is expecting.And I don’t want to keep on compressing unecessarily…

The animation codec quicktime file is a popular choice for after effects work, as it allows you to output any transparency information in the timeline. It’s a pretty space intensive codec however, so make sure you have enough storage space. You don’t specifiy how much/what length of media you want to transfer – but most people don’t transfer the entire programme/project, as it would be extremely hard to work with in AE.

A perfect case for exporting sequential stills. They are universal, easily imported and exported between MAC and PC without any concern for 4gb file size limitation, uncompressed, and can be 24-bit without an alpha channel or 32-bit with alpha.

You need to ask what your After Effects wizz is doing to your footage in the first place. Is he just colour correcting and adding titles/effects over your cut? Or is he compositing work shot blue/screen?
If it’s the latter, or something like it, then exporting an XML file from your sequence and using Automatic Duck Pro AE Pro import may be something you need to do.
