Many have posted here that they want to install Studio2 but don’t want to lose 5.1.4. I also did not want to lose A.Pack or the MPEG2 export option out of Quicktime.

    Here’s my tip:

Before installing Studio2 I simply add the verision number to the end of the application filename. Final Cut Pro becomes Final Cut Pro 5.1.4. I do that with all the Studio Apps. If I want to keep A.Pack I move it out of the Apps folder temporarily.

Now I install all the Studio Apps. with Studio 2 I had to reinstall my cad drivers, but that was it. All my layout configs, plugins etc all work in 5.1.4, 6.0 and the rest. I still have FCP 3.0 on my G5. And 4.5. I have Motion 2 and 3. Soundtrack 1 and 2 etc.

This has helped me, over the past few years, move into the new apps gradually, without crashing the house down! I can open an old 5.1.2 project and keep it in that version.

As always, any time I upgrade I make a clone of my drive (thank goodness for apps like Carbon Copy Cloner and the rest) so I know I have that backup before an OS update or a quicktime update that breaks a driver.

Is this method a big secret? Because I don’t se too many people posting it as a solution to the quandry of upgrading to the new version…

I would recommend creating a completely separate boot drive for each version of Final Cut.

Wow….that seems not so productive when my simple solution has been working fine in a professional environment since FCP 3.0.

But I do have backups of previous discs….I just never have had to boot into them using my method for making an upgrade.

Now, for major OS upgrades, that is another story!

The reason I sagest different boot drives for each is because it is hard to say what conflicts if any there may be. And you would hate to have a potential conflict screw with projects, ore even worse corrupt your project.

Yes it is a little more work, but I think it is totally worth it when it comes to protecting the valuable projects you want to use in FCP 5.
