Rendering Hell…
Posted by Mark Pybus on February 23, 2007 at 4:37 pmHi there,
I’ve been having a bit of an issue trying to render a “video wall”. The comp has about 120 layers of video (each layer about 5 seconds long). Whenever I render, it crashes after a few minutes and tells me that AE cannot create the image buffer. I realize that I’m working with a lot of layers, but I’ve got 4 GB of RAM. Is this situation hopeless?
Many thanks.

February 23, 2007 at 4:43 pmah the eternal issue. what you can do is go to the secret menu, hold shift (make sure you do this first), then, while holding shift, go to your preferences. There will now be a category called Secret at the bottom of the list. Click on disable cache. and the next part takes a bit of experiment and is very project specific. If you find you are crashing after a certain number of frames, say 100, you should try something a little lower than that, like 90. This will dump the memory of the frames up to 90 and start over. If it keeps crashing, lower this number till it works. If the problem continues then im not sure what to do. I hope I got all that right and that it works for you. good luck

February 23, 2007 at 4:53 pmAre you messing with me? I actually tried to find “the secret menu” but it doesn’t seem to exist on my version of AE 7.0 – and I did hold down shift.

Thanks!

February 23, 2007 at 5:55 pmHi Dave,
Thanks for the input. I have one more question though. Assuming that I turn off the visibility for let’s say half of the layers and then render the comp, will that take some of the “rendering burden” off of the system, or will I have to physically delete some of the layers. I guess I’m not sure whether the AE doesn’t have to “process” layers with the visibility icon turned off.
Thanks.

February 23, 2007 at 11:04 pm> “video wall”. The comp has about 120 layers of video (each layer about 5 seconds long). < Pre-rendering allows you to replace most of the individual layers with movies. That is, if you've got a wall, you're scaling and positioning all of your video layers and precomps, yes? And you've got 120 individual items in the wall or do you have more like 9 or 16 video monitors that have a series of dissolving or cutting clips that appear in each one? If the latter, you'd [prendered most or all of the comps that are in each monitor window. Then you're only positioning the movie, you're not processing every frame of all of those individual items. bogiesan This is my standard sigfile so do not take it personally: “For crying out loud, read the freakin’ manual.”

February 24, 2007 at 1:38 amI’ve actually got 120 video monitors in my video wall — 10 monitor width by 12 monitor length in a 1200 x 800 comp. Even after using the “secret menu” fix, I’m still having problems rendering. Does anyone know if I might have more success rendering “one row at a time” ie: turning off the visibility icon for all the monitors (other than one row) and rendering in this manner row by row, then re-importing the 12 rows and precomposing in order to create the finished wall. I would then put a camera move on the pre-comp in order to spice it up.
Finally, doees turning off the visibility icon for some layers allow AE to use less “juice” when rendering (ie turning off all of the icons accept for one row), or do I need to delete actually delete the layers? I’d try it myself right now, but I’m no longer at work.
Thanks to everyone who’s helped out thus far!
