Scale in Z Depth?
Posted by Adambl on February 23, 2007 at 2:51 pmHey folks,
Kind of a basic question I’m sure. I’m trying to stretch a masked solid in 3D space. There seems to be a z modifier for scale added when you turn the layer 3D but it doesn’t quite do what I want.
Basically I want the letter “l” to rotate to “2”.
Thanks

February 23, 2007 at 4:03 pmIf you are trying to extrude a solid and make it a 3d object with real depth, AE can’t do that natively. You will need a plug-in for this type of thing. and in many cases a real 3d application will better suit you.

February 23, 2007 at 4:15 pmTry using Card Wipe to have one layer rotate and reveal another like flipping a card. Set the Rows and Columns to 1 and set the Card Back to the layer you want revealed.
As for Z-Scale Ahron has a great tutorial and podcast about its curious uses.

February 23, 2007 at 6:23 pmLayers in AE have no depth, so what you want does not work. You need to employ workarounds by e.g. using the Shatter effect or Card Dance or get yourself Zaxwerx Invigorator to create extruded type. BTW, even if AE supportd 3D extrusions, your scenario wouldn’t work – all vertices of the shape would be in the same Z-position and since their is no separation between them, making effectively 0. And we all know (or should know) you can multiply zery with as large numbers as you want, it will always be zero. To circumvent that, even 2D layers would have to have depth… But well, I’m diverting and probably only confusing you.

Just doing it in Maya is probably the easiest option.
Thanks for the help,
