Im in Final cut 5.1.4, and converting 59.94 footage shot with the varicam at 60 for a slow mo effect. I was told to use the frame rate convertor, however when I click on the clip and try and open the convertor, nothing happens. Am I missing something? Does the Cine Tools telecine conform do the same thing?

    First
where did you get the converter?- for FCP 5.1 you have to use the version on the install disk
the web version will not work.

    second
files need to be selected directly in the browser not inside any bin or on the timeline.

    3rd
They had to have been captured via FW from the deck/ P2 or a with Kona card using DVCPROHD compression.

If the files are true 59.94, I like to use Cinema Tools.

    Open the clip
    Choose conform
    Select the frame rate
    Select okay

This will just remap the 60 frames over the frame rate you want.

But if there are any duplicate frames, definitely use the frame rate converter.

[Russell Lasson] “f the files are true 59.94, I like to use Cinema Tools.”

Doing this means that you are altering the MASTER clip…destructively. Meaning that you are changing it from 59.94 to 23.98…no going back. Using the Frame Rate Converter allows you to create NEW media…so you have a slo-motion clip, and a regular speed clip…in case you need one OR the other.

Also, make sure that you do all of this converting in a DIFFERENT project. For some reason FCP won’t do this in a project that is already very populated with media. Odd, but true.

Here’s a tutorial on the subject:

Worked great thanks. Real quick, whats the difference between using the frame rate convertor or cine tools?

Yup. Sorry. Forgot to mention to duplicate your clip before you go into Cinema Tools.

The FRC works fine. I just like Cinema Tools better.

[spud19] “whats the difference between using the frame rate convertor or cine tools”
there is no quick answer for this:

the software FRC was designed to act in a manner similar to Panasonic’s $35K hardware version, removing duplicate frames and retiming the video to match your chosen frame rate.

this would include a speed ramp –or a varying change of frame rates in a single clip

CT only does one think – a conform – or globally changing the base frame rate of the clip.
DO NOT USE THIS METHOD for Panasonic offspeed footage- it incorrectly retimes your project and can create duplicate frame patterns that may be rejected by the networks

a Conform can also not handle any frame rates not listed in the application, so no 48 fps or 22 or 8 fps settings cannot be used since they do not exist out side of a camera, however all of them are available when working with the FRC or a Kona Card.

Aja’s Kona Card can properly remove redundant frames and retime your footage during a real time ingest to match it to what it was SHOT at with a Varicam.

I have never had an issue with conversion of any Varicam footage in the original project
folder, it just cannot be inside a bin, it has to be in the root level of the browser.

Well, Walter and I have…so THPHTHPHTHPHTHPH!!!

AND when people report issues of the FRC not working, when we suggest the new project approach, it solve it for them.

    You’re special.
