  compression question

  okay….so I just finished my project….export to DVDSP 4 to author the DVD…..set the compression settings in DVDSP to MPEG-2 two pass etc……all looks great on my standard TV…..when i played it on my buddies flat screen ( HD ) it looked terrible…..I am authoring this DVD for the commercial market….do I need to do different compressions for SD and HD ??

  YOu compressed and burned a Standard Def DVD…which when blown up onto an HD set will not look as good as on your standard TV. On you standard TV, it looks fine as the DVD is 720×486 and the TVs resolution is 720×486.

  Get to your buddies Flatscreen HD set and it will either be blown up to 1280×720 or 1920×1080…depending on the set. So blown up 2 to 3 times the normal size.

  Yes, there are different compressions for SD DVD and HD DVD.

  how terrible?? SD DVD’s look great on my HD set,, mind you,, my player up-converts SD to HD, but regular broadcast TV looks good as well.

  does you friend have a good quality HD set? HD sets handle HD relatively the same way,, but some are far better than others at dealing with SD signals.

  I would imagine your friend’s set isn’t great at working with SD. For good measure,, i’d try your DVD on another HD screen to make sure it isnt some other issue. A good SD DVD should still look clean on the average HD TV.
