Artifacts while using color Red on black
Is there a trick to avoid the artifacts around the letters (like the curves on a D or R) while using the color RED for the color of the font. I don’t see the artifacts when using white. My settings are set at best. It seems to be this way with a photoshop file, jpg or any other graphic file. AfterEffects 7.0, I can’t remember having this problem with earlier versions? Am I missing something? RGB NTSC montior aside it should’t look this bad. Suggestions?

Are you sure you are working with broadcast safe colors and have your workspace color profiles set accordingly? AE7 works slightly different in this respect. Other than that there hasn’t changed anything.

Red and black are notoriously dodgy together..it will look fine on a PC monitor, but TV by it’s nature struggles with reds. Try to keep your red as unsaturated as possible to avoid ‘bleeding’. Try to avoid red on black or black on red. If it’s unavoidable sometimes putting a slight blur on the text can help, or a white keyline to separate the red and black. Not ideal but that tele for you! Not sure if HD LCDs cope with it better (?), but even when reds are well under broadcast safe they can still be troublesome on standards CRTs…and be safe in the knowledge they will look even worse on an old 14″ domestic TV.
