ProRez revisited again
Hello all,
This is kind of a follow-on to my original post over on the Kona forum a couple weeks ago, where I had trouble capturing and playing back ProRez HQ on my dual 2.7.
I got my new RAID working over the weekend, captured some HDCAM originated uncompressed 1080i footage: one high detail clip with minimal motion, one high detail clip with lots of motion, and one comparitively low detail shot.
Used Media Manager to transcode the clips over to ProRez HQ; then I transcoded them again back to renamed uncompressed clips. I put the original UC clips next to the transcoded-from-ProRez clips next to each other on an FCP6 timeline for comparison. I could not see any discernable difference between them, in detail, color, resolution etc. on my 24″ computer monitor at full screen, & my 14″ Multi-format evaluation monitor.
I then tried a fairly severe color grade on one of the UC-from-PR clips, and it handled it just as well as the original UC clip.
So, ProRez HQ should be a super codec for archiving purposes.
Additional note: Just read Tim Wilson’s excellent article on ProRez, and, although I’m probably still going to have to capture in uncompressed, I’m going to give the “Medium Quality Playback” ProRez a try. Maybe I can edit in ProRez yet with my “OLD” dual 2.7!
Thanks to all,
Gary
