  • What is a Quartz Extreme graphics card?

Posted by Alfred Guzzetti on June 8, 2007 at 6:43 pm

I just bought a desktop Mac Pro and FCP 6. The system requirements say that FCP needs an AGP or PCI Express Quartz Extreme graphics card and that integrated Intel graphics are not supported. I have no idea what this means. Does the computer already have this card in it? Do I have to buy it? I installed FCP, which seems to run normally, but I haven’t put it to the test.

I’ve been using FCP 4.5 on a G4 for years and don’t remember anything about graphics cards.

You’re fine. It already has it.

I find it funny that it says it won’t work with integrated intel graphics when there is currently no apple system that does.

Actually I think the MacBook uses an Intel integrated GPU.

I came across the same thing when attempting to install FCP 6 only it will not allow me to install it says it recommends i get a Quartz Extreme capable graphics card and 64MB of VRAM which i believe i have, I have an ATI Mobility Radeon X1400, if you have any info on how to bypass this or fix the problem please let me know.

What I got was just a warning. I clicked on “OK” and this allowed me to bypass the warning and install FCP 6. Sorry that I don’t know how to get past the roadblock you’ve run into.

We moved our machine which had neverpreviously had a problem with FCP 6 even though we use an NVIDIA GeForce 7300GT card which does not support Quartz Extreme.

Suddenly we couldn’t open FCP, Compressor etc, with the message that we weren’t using a Quartz Extreme capable card.

We found a solution on the Blackmagic support site, which worked for us.

just struck the same error message:

that I am not using a Quartz Extreme capable card and have FCP failing to open.

even though i have not changed any settings etc since last opening FCP on my macbookpro.

    any ideas?
