Hi there,
Short way = MagicBullet / Tinderbox plugin – both support this “look”.
Long way =
– Create manual overlays of a vignette and multiply onto footage
– keyframe and wiggle the brightness/contrast filter
– Use PS to create some grunge textures (scanning or manually drawing) and overlay them randomly and subtly onto the footage as the old film often stained
– Scan some hairs in and overlay them for 1 or 2 frames here an there, animate them traveling vertically across the screen or flickering (bend etc.) on the spot for a few frames.
– Animate the film sliding 0-40pixels left to right over 50 or so frames. This simulate gate weave
– Use the time remapping to slow down and speed up the footage slightly (for when film were hand cranked)
You can go on with many more little details but that should get you started. A lot of work – hence the plugins 😉
